Your Prescription for Laughs

As the bottom line increasingly becomes the top priority, every employee in the hospital has felt the added pressure in an already stressful field. With job descriptions changing from week to week and enough paperwork to fell a good-sized forest, there has never been a more stressful time to work in healthcare. Insurance payments are down, support staff is being cut, job satisfaction is down. In fact, the only thing that is up is stress. Be it the antiquated computer systems (or their unwieldy upgrades), the constant job cuts, or the seemingly constant "reviews", Dr. Iseman has seen it all. But, more importantly, he sees the humor in it. Showing how to use humor to combat stress, Dr. Iseman proves that laughter really is the best medicine.

A Laughing Matter: How Arthritis Took Me from Doctor to Patient to Person

Before Dr. Matt Iseman started dispensing humorous one-liners as a professional comedian, he dispensed medicine as a licensed physician. But four years ago, soon after leaving his job as a doctor, he received a diagnosis that was anything but funny: He had Rheumatoid Arthritis. Since that diagnosis, he has been coping with RA while struggling to become a star. In this presentation, Dr. Iseman shares how the sense of humor and positive outlook that fuels his professional endeavors also helps him deal with life as a patient.

Speaker Information

Regularly entertaining medical professionals with the skills of a professional comedian and the experience of a medical doctor, Dr. Matt Iseman finds humor in an industry that too often forgets the importance of laughter.

An honors graduate of Princeton University and the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Iseman headed home to the University of Colorado for a residency in Internal Medicine. Now based out of Los Angeles, he is a licensed physician and a professional comedian who captivates audiences from all walks of life with his hilarious "presentations" that revolve around his real-life experiences as a physician.

Combining an energetic, charismatic stage presence with incisive material, Dr. Iseman skewers topics from lunchtime conferences on morbidity and mortality to "pager duels" to malpractice woes. Always hilarious and ever respectful of the profession, he has performed for hospital meetings, medical conferences and pharmaceutical company events from coast to coast, reminding healthcare professionals that, while laughter may not cure diseases, it can make them a little less painful.

Audiences may recognize Dr. Iseman as the host of "Casino Night" on the Game Show Network or "Scream Play" on E! Entertainment Television. Now the new co-host of the Style Network's top show, "Clean House." One of the current hosts on Style Network's Clean House, he will appear in the upcoming Transformers 2 movie and has also appeared on Comedy Central's Premium Blend, The Drew Carey Show, NCIS, and had a recurring role on General Hospital; but not as a doctor. Matt's "Goto Guy" role on the Style Network's "Clean House" has brought him into his 3rd season as a host on the #1 show on the Style Network. He also hosts a spin-off show called "Clean House Comes Clean" that is the #2 show on the network.

Taking his comedy around the world, Dr. Iseman received an overwhelming response to two sold-out USO shows at Kunsan Air Force Base in Kunsan, Korea. He was invited to headline a tour throughout Europe in March 2003, hitting 15 bases in 18 days, and he has since returned overseas to entertain troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, and Hungary. He also continues to headline major comedy clubs across the United States.
