The Choices of a ChampionFocusing on success in school, peer pressure, alcohol and drug awareness, gangs, and promiscuity (in high schools only), Davis uses his platform as a former professional football player with the New York Giants to let kids know that they don't have to be a world-class athlete, just a world-class person, to succeed in life. The attention of the students is captured by Davis' incredible feats of strength, such as bending steel bars, breaking baseball bats, ripping phone books in half, and crushing concrete. These feats - coupled with positive, exciting music - create a thrilling atmosphere and a lasting impression. During the assembly there is a great deal of student interaction, including volunteer participation and humor.
Speaker Information
Keith Davis is a man who loves to see people succeed. Although he's had a remarkable football and academic career, he clearly remembers his humble beginnings. Born in inner city Los Angeles, his father committed suicide when Davis was only four years old. He grew up in a neighborhood infested with gang and drug activity, but at seventeen, Davis made a decision to become a leader, not a follower. He became determined to make the system work for him, not against him.
Davis' determination paid off in tremendous academic achievement. He went from being a high school remedial reader to graduating from the University of Southern California as the number one academic student on his football team. Earning a degree in business finance, he had the highest grade point average among his team members, appeared on the Dean's List, was a member of the Honor Society, earned Academic All-Conference recognition, and received a Scholar Award of Honor.
One of the nation's top All-American high school football recruits, Davis became USC's leading tackler and an All-Conference linebacker. He was also named to the All-American Strength Team, played in two Rose Bowl Championship games, and was selected to play in the All-Star Hula Bowl. Following college, Davis signed to play professional football with the New York Giants. Although his career was very brief, he had the opportunity to play with some of the NFL's greatest all-time players. Davis, one of the strongest players on the team, bench presses 515 pounds and leg presses over 1800 pounds. His accomplishments have been recognized by Sports Illustrated, Ebony, and Essence magazines, as well as by USA Today, ESPN, ABC, and NBC.
Bigger than Davis' muscular 6'1", 265-pound frame is his heart for people. Realizing that true strength is not measured by one's physical ability but by one's character and will to succeed, Davis chooses to be a man of character in a world of compromise. With a message of hope and encouragement, he has spoken in thousands of schools, prisons, churches, and businesses in Europe, Australia, South America, and Asia.
Davis is most drawn to speaking to young people. He has been actively involved in the Big Brother program for several years and has served as a mentor to several young men. Davis and his wife founded Champions for Today, formerly InsideOut International, an organization through which Davis has developed one of the nation's top public school assembly programs. Undoubtedly one of the most exciting, life changing programs that helps deal with the tough issues facing youth today, the primary message of the program reflects Davis' own life example: no obstacle is too tough to overcome.
Testimonials
"The impact of the conference and the message given by Mr. Davis has reached the lives of many. Not only was he able to reach the youths in the group, but also the adults whom are struggling to rebuild their own lives. Mr. Davis' message was both enthusiastic and illuminating."
- MFI Recovery Center
"The response has been phenomenal! We have had students come up to us after Keith's presentations and thank us for bringing him, principals come to us and commend Keith on both a wonderful message and powerful presentation style that truly reaches the kids, and faculty ask us how we were ever able to find him. Keith spoke to approximately 4500 students at 7 presentations and NEVER tired. He always had time for the students afterwards and we feel he definitely made a difference in the lives of many of them. We could not have chosen a better speaker, nor a more genuine person than Keith to come to Del Rio and speak to our youth. He was a joy and pleasure to work with and we'll be extremely happy to have him back again!"
