Speaker Information
Few personalities in baseball history have earned the level of respect accorded to New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre. Fewer yet can boast of the twin successes Torre has achieved on the playing field and in the dugout as a Manager.
Since taking over as Manager of the Yankees in November 1995, Torre has tackled the job with class and strategic mastery, leading the team to five World Series appearances in six years, winning the title four times. In 1996, his first season as skipper, he led the Yankees to their first championship since 1978. He then guided the Yanks to three straight world titles between 1998 and 2000, becoming the first team to three-peat since the Oakland A's in the 1970s. Most recently, Torre's Yankees fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks in a dramatic seven-game series in the fall of 2001.
As a player, Torre won the National League MVP award as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1971. In leading the league with a .363 batting average, 230 hits, 137 RBIs and 352 total bases, he became the first player to lead the National League in four offensive categories since Stan Musial in 1948. In his major league career, Torre compiled a .297 batting average, with 252 home runs and 1,185 RBIs. He made the All-Star team nine times.
Beyond his statistical accomplishments, Torre is known as one of the sport's true gentlemen. He is the co-author of Chasing the Dream: My Lifelong Journey to the World Series, and the inspirational management guide, Joe Torre's Ground Rules for Winners: 12 Keys to Managing Team Players, Tough Bosses, Setbacks, and Success.
Torre is involved with several charities, including CaP Cure, an organization that raises money for prostate cancer research. The cause is particularly important to him as a survivor of prostate cancer. In addition, Torre recently launched the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation to benefit victims of domestic violence. The Foundation was established in memory of his mother, Margaret, who suffered from domestic violence at the hands of Torre's father. His own fear of being abused kept him away from home throughout his formative years. Resolute that no child should live in fear, the Foundation's guiding principle is that every child has the right to be safe at home.
