Boomers on Ice

Are you a baby boomer? Does your back hurt, your knee ache, or is your shoulder sore? Have you ever asked yourself, "What is happening to me? I'm just falling apart!"

The baby-boom generation, more than 76 million in all, are the first to grow up recognizing not only the pleasures but health benefits of regular physical activity. As they push to stay active, they now account for nearly one-third of all Americans participating in bicycling, basketball, baseball, running and other leisure sports activities. The boomers are also joining adult sports leagues to again experience the excitement of team competition, and attempt to recapture past glories. As they continue to push themselves, injuries, aches and pain are on the rise. Activity-related injuries have become the No. 2 reason for visits to a doctor's office nationwide, behind the common cold, according to a 2003 survey by National Ambulatory Medical Care.

With his years of experience as a sports medicine physician including his current expertise as Team Physician for the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets, Dr. Ruane will lead an entertaining discussion that can help you:

  • Understand why you can't do now what you did when you were 20 years old
  • Learn tips to help avoid injury and stay active
  • Know when to seek the advice of a healthcare professional
  • Hear most common misperceptions of aging

"Boomers on Ice" is an insightful, humorous look at how to overcome the scourge of your aging frame.

Pain Killers, Steroids and Glucosamine, Oh My!

Arthritis and related joint pains are now the number one cause of disability in the United States. Most Americans have grown up with the notion that there is not much you can do about arthritis, and you should just learn to accept it. Dr. Ruane would like to change that perception.

It has been quoted that the public is roughly five years behind in awareness and understanding of the latest medical advances available for their problems. For arthritis is more like 50, as many myths and misperceptions regarding its proper care and available treatments live on. This is of course complicated by the recent media blitz exploiting the life-threatening risks of pain relievers, and it all leaves patients in a quandary.

"Pain Killers, Steroids and Glucosamine, Oh My!" can help change the lives of those living with arthritis. Dr. Ruane breaks through the myths and gets you up-to-date on how you can live your best.
