The Perfection Trap Fixed: Dreams and Dilemmas of Cosmetic Surgery Building ESTEEMSpeaker Information
Dr. Catherine Baker-Pitts, the author of Fed Up, The Perfection Trap and the upcoming Fixed: Dreams and Dilemmas of Cosmetic Surgery, is a dynamic and passionate advocate for women's emotional health. An expert on the cultural pressures that drive women to pursue bodily control, if not "perfection" - whether through starvation, cosmetic surgery, gastric bypass, or other practices - Dr. Baker-Pitts provides audiences with a deeper understanding of women's difficult quest for self-esteem, as well as with tools for advancing personal and social change.
In addition to maintaining a psychotherapy practice in Philadelphia, Dr. Baker-Pitts has been a popular guest on radio and television, and her work has been highlighted in national and international news magazines, including Glamour, Bust, The London Big Issue, and in Susie Orbach's book, Bodies. She has spoken at more than 50 colleges and universities across the United States and at numerous professional conferences, hospitals, and psychotherapy workshops. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at The Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Center.
Dr. Baker-Pitts is a member of The Body Attachment Group, a research project that has drawn together an international team of feminist psychoanalysts, body and movement therapists, and infant-attachment researchers. She is also a faculty member and supervisor at The Women's Therapy Centre Institute in New York, which offers training to postgraduates in feminist relational psychoanalytic psychotherapy. She was a founding member of the National Eating Disorders Association, and she serves on the editorial board of Eating Disorders Journal of Treatment and Prevention. Her current clinical work and research focus on the intersection of gender, media, technology, and the body.
